Dal Bhat

Ingredients

Spice mix / masala powder:

10 dried chili peppers

2.5 cinnamon stick

10 cloves

10 cardamom pods

7.5 tsp coriander seeds

25 peppercorns

 

Dal bhat:

1kg red lentils

10 onions finely chopped

2 ½ tsp turmeric

Oil

Salt to taste

2 large bunches of coriander, chopped to serve

 

Recipe

  • Make the masala powder by finely grinding all ingredients under the cup of spice mix

  • For the Dal: Boil the lentils until tender.

  • Heat oil in a pan, fry the onion until golden brown, add 10 tablespoons of masala powder, stir well and cook for 1 to 2 minutes.

  • Add the cooked lentils, turmeric and salt. If it is too thick add water. Cook on medium heat for 6-8 minutes

  • Serve with coriander (optional) rice, saag, tarkari and rice
